St. Munchin’s Community Enterprise Centre has officially opened the St Leilas Age Friendly Community Education Campus last Friday, October 28.

Noel Earlie from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund officially opened the school which offers a Care of the Elderly Course QQI Level 5 supported by ETB, DSP, HSE & The Age Friendly Alliance and has never been done in Ireland before. The course has 8 modules and includes work placement.

Since its establishment in 2005, St. Munchin’s Community Centre has promoted and developed community involvement within the Parish. They have developed a broad representative base within the community.  The community centre receives funding and support from FÁS, the HSE and Limerick City Council without which the core activities would not be possible.

The aim of the St. Leila’s Age Friendly Community Education Campus is to promote a positive approach to age-friendly education, with future plans to expand into education for early school leavers, merging youth and elderly educational services.

“This is an absolutely amazing set up here,” said Noel Earlie, adding, “St Munchin’s is a remarkable organisation and this is a wonderful addition and you can all be very proud of it.”

“For the past 11 years, it has been a fantastic expression of care, compassion and support for the community. I know the people benefit from this space on a daily basis or indeed can stay in their own homes because their meals are brought to them from this facility. I know you know how lucky you are,” he concluded.

Linda Ledger, St. Munchin’s Community Centre, spoke of the plans for the future in the community centre, including the grounds of St. Leila’s School. A future aim for the space at St. Leila’s is to construct bungalow housing that would allow for affordable respite for people in the community.

“We aim to be an approachable, energetic, motivating and developing group who will assist our community to develop a sense of pride and reach its full potential. Our aim is to achieve this through supporting development within our community, networking, identifying and responding to needs and issues. We aim to enjoy what we do,” – St. Munchin’s Community Enterprise Centre.
